The ultimate event metric isn't attendance or engagement - it's pipeline. Attributing revenue to events requires connecting event interactions to CRM opportunities, and distinguishing between event-sourced and event-influenced deals.

    Event-Sourced vs Event-Influenced Pipeline

Event-sourced pipeline tracks deals where the event was the first meaningful touchpoint - the prospect discovered you at the event. Event-influenced pipeline tracks deals where an existing prospect attended the event, accelerating their buying journey. Both matter; report them separately.

Most teams over-count influenced pipeline by using wide attribution windows. Be disciplined: an event "influenced" a deal only if the contact engaged meaningfully (not just registered) and the opportunity progressed within 90 days.

    CRM Attribution Setup

Before the event, create a CRM campaign with member statuses: Registered, Attended, Engaged, Met-with-Sales. After the event, associate contacts with the campaign and assign statuses. This enables cross-channel attribution that credits the event alongside other touchpoints.

    Measuring Deal Acceleration

Events often accelerate existing deals rather than creating new ones. Measure this by comparing average sales cycle length for deals with event touchpoints vs those without. If event-influenced deals close 15 days faster, that acceleration has quantifiable value.

Track stage-to-stage progression rates pre and post-event. If an event helps move deals from "evaluation" to "decision," that's acceleration worth reporting to stakeholders.

    Event ROI Formula

Event ROI = (Pipeline Value × Win Rate × Average Deal Size) ÷ Total Event Cost. Use your actual historical win rate for event-sourced leads, not your overall win rate. Event leads often convert differently than inbound or outbound leads.

Report ROI at multiple time horizons: 30-day pipeline, 90-day pipeline, and closed revenue. Early reporting shows potential; later reporting shows realized value. Both are important for budget justification.

    Event Pipeline Forecasting

After three or more events, you'll have enough data to forecast expected pipeline from upcoming events. Use historical registration-to-pipeline conversion rates, adjusted for event type and audience, to set pre-event targets and inform budget decisions.
