Deliverability is the foundation of email marketing analytics. If your emails don't reach the inbox, every other metric is meaningless. In 2024, Google and Yahoo introduced strict sender requirements that raised the bar for all email marketers. Here's how to monitor and improve inbox placement.
Delivery Rate vs. Inbox Placement
Delivery rate measures whether the receiving server accepted your email (not bounced). Inbox placement rate measures whether the email landed in the inbox versus spam or promotions tab. You can have 99% delivery rate and 50% inbox placement. Track both.
Sender Reputation Monitoring
- IP reputation: Check via Google Postmaster Tools, Microsoft SNDS, and third-party tools like Sender Score. Shared IPs are affected by other senders' behavior
- Domain reputation: Increasingly more important than IP reputation. Google primarily uses domain-based reputation
- Authentication: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are now mandatory. Google and Yahoo reject or spam-folder unauthenticated email
Google and Yahoo 2024 Requirements
For senders of 5,000+ emails per day:
- SPF and DKIM authentication required
- DMARC policy required (at minimum p=none)
- One-click unsubscribe header required (RFC 8058)
- Spam complaint rate must stay below 0.3% (target under 0.1%)
- Valid forward and reverse DNS records
Deliverability Metrics to Monitor
- Bounce rate: Hard bounces (invalid addresses) should stay under 0.5%. Soft bounces (temporary failures) under 2%
- Spam complaint rate: The most critical metric. Above 0.1% is a warning; above 0.3% causes deliverability damage
- Inbox placement rate: Use seed testing tools to measure actual inbox vs. spam placement across providers
- Blocklist status: Monitor whether your IP or domain appears on any blocklists (Spamhaus, Barracuda, etc.)
List Hygiene and Management
Clean your list regularly. Remove hard bounces immediately. Suppress inactive subscribers who haven't engaged in 180+ days (or move them to a re-engagement sequence first). Use double opt-in for new subscribers to ensure list quality from the start.
For monitoring AI anomaly detection, set up alerts for sudden drops in delivery rate or spikes in complaint rate - these indicate deliverability problems that need immediate attention.
